RAMP Created To Ease Driver Shortage

The AMSA is always looking for new ways to help the productivity and effectiveness of the moving industry. To do this, programs are created to target specific areas that need improvement. At a Louisville, KY news conference last week, Mayor Greg Fischer and other officials officially kicked off the AMSA's RAMP program.

RAMP, formally known as Registered American Moving Professionals, is aimed at identifying and training hundreds of new van operators to address the industry's chronic shortage of qualified drivers.

Next month, Jefferson Community & Technical College will offer the first free, three-week training course. The RAMP program training is funded with federal workforce money and Kentucky government dollars, and initially aims to turn out at least 100 drivers who have been promised jobs at six AMSA-member companies, with the potential to earn up to $80,000 a year.

"These are solid, good-paying jobs that are badly needed by the moving van industry and certainly much needed by our citizens," Fischer said in a news release.

Those who do not have a commercial driver's license will get a scholarship to earn one at an approved driving school after completing the program. Training for a commercial driver's license costs about $4,000, while the RAMP certification normally costs $1,600, said Michael Gritton, executive director of KentuckianaWorks. Graduates will also earn four hours of college credit.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent degree, along with undergoing a drug screening and a criminal background check. Applicants will also complete a career assessment to see if they are suited for the work, which AMSA believes is critical to their long-term success.

Local companies have said they could hire at least 200 drivers through next spring.
