YP40 – Next Generation of Leaders – A Reminder to Today’s Managers

Christina Seskey

I had the opportunity to attend the 2nd ever regional YP40 event last night in Southern California.  If you’re not familiar with YP40, it’s a group designated for Young Professionals (under 40) in the relocation industry. I can’t begin to explain how important it is for us to share our experiences and to network with others who are at the same point in their careers. It allows us to form relationships and to grow as a community but most importantly it provides us with a venue to ask questions and gather knowledge about our industry.

Believe it or not, being the next generation comes with a lot of pressure.  Knowing that expectations are high and that we have a lot to learn in our respective fields can be intimidating; in fact, sometimes it can be overwhelming.  The input we receive from our managers and the support that we are given as we grow is critical.  So I thought I’d share a few tips to help us interact together on this journey.

  1. Share Your Knowledge – Be a mentor, come to industry events, talk on panels, and be a source of information.
  2. Don’t be Afraid to Engage Us – Let us resolve a difficult situation or complete an important part of a project.  Assign us to cross-functional teams, and let us interact with as many different employees as possible.
  3. Let Us Make Mistakes – We will make mistakes.  We’re going to challenge the way that things have always been. Let us make the mistakes and learn what works for us, and for the team.
  4. Give Us Feedback – Set aside time to talk with us about our performance at regular intervals and be consistent. Help us identify our strengths and show us how to improve on our weaknesses.

Finally, remember that we are your legacy. The things that you teach us, your mentorship, and your interest in our success, will all be carried with us throughout our careers.  We’re counting on you, to mold us into the next generation of great leaders.
